Bubling Density Concoction

Do you know what an Xplorer GLX is? It is definitely not a new four wheel drive SUV. Xplorer GLX (www.pasco.com) is state of the art portable lab equipment that can accomodate four sensors at the same time. Students can take it to a lake for example, to measure water temperature, wind velocity, light intensity, and other physical matters. Students then download the data onto a computer in the lab for analysis.

The Jakarta International Multicultural School (JIMS) is currently in the process of buying a good number of Xplorer GLX sets to equip its science lab in the new school building. JIMS will move to the new building in July 2009. But JIMS is not going to rely just on state of the art equipment for its science classes. While state of the art equipment is exciting for students, there are many other eye opening scientific explorations that are based on our everyday living environment. JIMS teaches science not just to help its students to aspire to become rocket scientists, but also to make them better understand their living environment.

Do you want to know what bubbling density concoction is? Come over to JIMS and Xendra and Jeremy will demonstrate it by using everyday cooking materials such as baking soda, vinegar, oil, food colouring and corn syrup. You could also watch Nico and Kashka demonstrate their Mentos-Diet Coke Geyser. Not only can the geyser reach as high as 16 feet, but it also teaches the students not to eat Mentos candy and drink soda at the same time.

If bubbling density concoction and the geyser do not sound funky enough, how about dancing raisins (performed by Ji Hwan and Ananda), magic bubbles (Yumi and Misa), and lemon suds (Eli and Dhea)? It was so much fun for Year 1-4 students to watch Year 5-6 students demonstrate their experiments during the Science Fair last week.
